DOE Proposes Efficiency Standards for Consumer Boilers

Legislative & Regulatory Updates

By Chuck White, VP of Regulatory Affairs

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has proposed revised energy efficiency standards for consumer heating boilers. The Proposed Rule makes small upgrades to oil fired hot water boilers but major changes to gas fired hot water boilers. DOE suggests eliminating non-condensing hot water boilers from the market. PHCC continues to maintain that the elimination of non-condensing heating products, those that can vent in masonry chimneys or double wall vents, to be a hardship for some installations. PHCC has filed comments to that effect with the Department and further asserts that DOE’s underlying assumptions significantly understate the costs and benefits of the proposed rule.
